Now this is going to be somewhat of a rant... but why does BBC keep remaking already phenomenal movies? Let me rephrase that, why does BBC keep making shortened versions of already phenomenal movies? Pride & Prejudice and now Jane Eyre. I don't think any version can top the A&E six hour length version of Pride & Prejudice. The characters are spot-on, especially the mother! There is room for the character development that Austen wrote and there is time to give all the extra stuff that those of us who have read the book and love it like to see. For me it is the equivalent of watching the Lord of the Rings series in the extended versions. There is no reason to watch shortened versions of amazing films that give you more details.
So back to Jane Eyre - not to say that the new version was horrible. It was great. Really. Whenever they remake a film they use prettier people and the cinematography is breathtaking and the soundtrack is great. They just had to cut out a lot to get it to fit into a theater-appropriate length, which in my opinion is sorta lame. One of my favorite scenes is where Rochester tries to trick everyone with the fake fortune teller at his house - and this scene inevitably gets cut when shortening the film, along with many others. I think my favorite film version of this is BBC's series that was four episodes back in 2006. You should watch it, and if you don't want to buy it you can watch it on youtube for free. No lie. I may or may not have been doing that the past couple nights with Sawyer. He loves it.
So in the end, BBC - please only remake a movie if you are going to do it legit - give us a real full length feature that gives us all the details we want with the updated filming techniques only! Thanks!
