So, my friend Elise and I went to get lottery tickets for a different show and didn't win, so we headed on over to Porgy and Bess to get student rush tickets and I am glad we did. We saw Norm Lewis (you might recognize him as Javert in the most recent West End production of Les Mis and also as Javert in the 25th Anniversary Concert) and Audra McDonald who is crazy famous (and engaged to ex-Mormon Will Swenson). It is a Gershwin musical and you can tell straight from the overture. It is really amazing how you can hear the signature of a composer in all of their works.
This musical is very sad. People don't get their happy endings, but I really like what Audra says at the end of the clip below - that it was about realizing that Bess was an addict and had very low self worth but a lot of love to give. It is really sad to watch her make her choices based on what she thinks will make her happy and so happy to watch Porgy love her despite her shortcomings. It used to be an opera and the music is very operatic so if that's not your thing, then you might not like it. BUT if you do go, just wait for the last note of the entire musical that Norm Lewis sings because it is AMAZING. Seriously.
